It is worth noticing that this is a definition, not a measured value. The prefix milli- means one thousandth, so a milligram is defined as a thousandth of a gram. There is no experiment behind it and no uncertainty in it.
The two operations

If you can only remember one of these, remember that milligrams are the smaller unit. It takes more of them to make the same mass, so the milligram number is always the bigger one.
The decimal-point shortcut
Dividing by 1,000 in base ten does not require long division. It moves the decimal point three places to the left. Multiplying by 1,000 moves it three places to the right.
The step most students miss is that every whole number has an invisible decimal point at the end. The number 250 is really 250. — and once you can see that point, moving it is straightforward.

Notice the last two rows: when there are not enough digits, you pad with zeros. 4. moving three places left needs two extra zeros to fill the gap, giving 0.004.

Showing your working
Most mark schemes award a mark for the method and a mark for the answer, so a bare number can score half of what it could. A complete answer has three parts:

Never drop the unit
An answer of 1.5 is not the same as 1.5 g. In science marking, a numerical answer without its unit is routinely marked wrong, however correct the arithmetic.
Two checks that catch nearly everything
The direction check
Converting to the larger unit makes the number smaller. Converting to the smaller unit makes it bigger. If 500 mg gave you 500,000 g, the decimal point went the wrong way.
The magnitude check
A paperclip weighs about 1 g. If a question about a tablet gives you an answer of 500 g, that is half a bag of sugar — clearly wrong. Anchoring to a familiar object is a fast reality test, and there is a full list of them in everyday objects and their weights.

Question 6 is the one that catches people out, and it is worth dwelling on. You cannot compare 0.4 with 450 directly — they are in different units. Converting both to milligrams first turns it into an obvious comparison. That habit is the single most useful thing in this article.
