Why micrograms need their own converter

Micrograms are where metric conversion stops being intuitive. A milligram is already small; a microgram is a thousandth of that. Converted straight to grams, a typical vitamin D figure of 25 mcg becomes 0.000025 g — a number nobody can read at a glance or check by eye.

That is exactly why the unit exists. Some nutrients and medicines are used in quantities so small that milligrams would need three or four decimal places, and grams would need six. Micrograms keep those amounts as ordinary readable numbers.

mcg, µg or ug?

All three mean microgram and all three are worth the same. µg is the official SI symbol, mcg is what medicine and supplement labels use, and ug is an informal substitute where the µ character is unavailable.

Labels prefer mcg for a safety reason: a handwritten µ can be read as an m, which would turn micrograms into milligrams and multiply the amount by a thousand.

Micrograms are where ordinary calculator arithmetic starts to show its seams. These are the exact SI relationships used here:

Dividing by a million using floating-point numbers introduces representation errors that become visible at this many decimal places. This calculator shifts digits in the exact decimal representation instead, so 1 mcg converts to exactly 0.000001 g with no trailing artefacts.

Display precision
