Vitamin and Supplement Labels: Understanding mg and g Dosages

A supplement aisle is an unusually demanding place to do unit conversion. Two bottles of the same nutrient sitting side by side may state their contents in different units, at different serving sizes, using numbers that differ by a factor of a thousand while describing identical amounts.
Why supplements use micrograms so often
Nutrients differ enormously in the quantities the body uses. Vitamin C is measured in tens or hundreds of milligrams; vitamin B12 in single micrograms. Using one unit for both would produce either huge numbers or unreadable decimals.

IU: the unit that is not a weight
Some labels, particularly older ones, state amounts in IU — international units. An IU is not a unit of mass at all. It measures biological activity, and the conversion to micrograms is different for every substance.
- Vitamin D: 1 mcg = 40 IU, so 1,000 IU = 25 mcg.
- Vitamin E: the conversion depends on whether the form is natural or synthetic.
- Vitamin A: the conversion depends on the source compound.
IU cannot be converted generically
There is no universal IU-to-milligram factor. Any conversion has to be specific to the substance and, for some vitamins, to the chemical form. Many regions have moved to stating mcg precisely because IU is so easy to misinterpret.
Serving size changes everything
The figure on the front of a bottle usually refers to a serving, and a serving is not always one tablet. A label advertising 1,000 mg of something may be describing what you get from three capsules.
- 1Find the serving size on the supplement facts panel — it is stated as a number of tablets, capsules or scoops.
- 2Divide the stated amount by that number to get the per-unit amount.
- 3Only then compare against another product, and only after converting both to the same unit.

The %DV column
Most supplement panels include a percentage of a daily reference value alongside the weight. That column does useful work — it puts the amount in context without you having to remember what 400 mcg of folate represents.
Its limitation is that reference values are population averages rather than personal targets, and some ingredients have no established reference value at all, in which case the column shows a dagger or an asterisk instead of a percentage.
A practical comparison routine
- 1Read the unit on each label — mg, mcg or IU. Do not assume they match.
- 2If either is IU, look for a mcg figure; IU cannot be converted generically.
- 3Convert both to the same weight unit.
- 4Divide by serving size to get a per-capsule figure.
- 5Now compare — and only now does price per unit mean anything.
